May 15: International Day of Families

 The International Day of Families has been observed on May 15 across the world to promote awareness of
issues relating to families and increase knowledge of social, economic and demographic progression that affects families which are the basic unit of society.
 2018 Theme: “Families and inclusive societies.”
 It explores role of families and family policies in advancing Sustainable Development Goal 16 (SDG 16) in terms of promoting peaceful and inclusive societies for sustainable development.

Pacific Ring of Fire

 The Ring of Fire is a string of volcanoes and sites of seismic activity, or earthquakes, around the edges of the Pacific Ocean.
 Roughly 90% of all earthquakes occur along the Ring of Fire, and the ring is dotted with 75% of all active volcanoes on Earth.
 The Ring of Fire isn’t quite a circular ring.
 It is shaped more like a 40,000-kilometer (25,000-mile) horseshoe.
 A string of 452 volcanoes stretches from the southern tip of South America, up along the coast of North America, across the Bering Strait, down through Japan, and into New Zealand.
 Several active and dormant volcanoes in Antarctica, however, “close” the ring.

NASA Mars Helicopter

NASA is planning to send a small helicopter to Mars as part of the space agency’s 2020 mission
The Mars Helicopter, a small, autonomous rotorcraft, will travel with the agency’s Mars 2020 rover mission, currently scheduled to launch in July 2020
The helicopter also contains built-in capabilities needed for operation at Mars, including solar cells to charge its lithium-ion batteries, and a heating mechanism to keep it warm through the cold Martian nights.
As a technology demonstration, the Mars Helicopter is considered a highrisk, high-reward project.
If it does not work, the Mars 2020 mission will not be impacted.

Prompt corrective action

 Reserve Bank has initiated prompt corrective action against public sector lender Dena in view of high non-performing loans, restricting the bank from giving fresh credit and new hiring.
 PCA norms allow the regulator to place certain restrictions such as halting branch expansion and stopping dividend payment.
 It can even cap a bank’s lending limit to one entity or sector.
 Other corrective action that can be imposed on banks include special audit, restructuring operations and activation of recovery plan.
 Banks’ promoters can be asked to bring in new management, too.
 The RBI can also supersede the bank’s board, under PCA.

Islamic Cooperation countries

Russia has come in support of Organization of Islamic Cooperation countries (OIC) in their effort to enter the Russian market.
Russia’s trade turnover with OIC countries stands at about $75 billion, with exports accounting for about $58 billion.
Imports from OIC countries total about $17 billion.
Organisation of Islamic Cooperation is an international organization founded in 1969, consisting of 57 member states.
It is the second largest inter-governmental organization after the United Nations.
The organisation states that it is “the collective voice of the Muslim world”
Works to “safeguard and protect the interests of the Muslim world in the spirit of promoting international peace and harmony“.
The OIC has permanent delegations to the United Nations and the European Union.

Promote export of notified goods manufactured/ produced in India.

Bengal florican

The critically endangered Bengal florican – also called as Bengal Bustard.
Fewer than 1,000 adult remain in the world in two very fragmented populations.
• It is listed as Critically Endangered on the IUCN Red List
• The other area is around Cambodia and Vietnam.

Mansoor Ahmed :

 Mansoor Ahmed (49), Pakistan’s World Cup-winning hockey goalkeeper, has passed away in Karachi on May 12, 2018.
 He was known as the 1994 World Cup hero for Pakistan.
 Mansoor has been a sporting icon in Pakistan, and played a key hand in the team’s win in the 1994 World Cup in Sydney.
 He was considered the best hockey goalkeeper in the world during his playing days.
 He has played 338 international matches, participated in three Olympics and various other high-profile events in a career spanning from 1986 to 2000.
 In addition to being named the world’s best goalkeeper on four occasions, Ahmed was bestowed with a presidential award in 1988 and the Pride of Performance in 1994.

Swara Mauli Award :

 Legendary singer Lata Mangeshkar, who has sung many soulful songs, was honoured with ‘Swara Mauli’ title by Shrimad Jagatguru Shankaracharya Vidyanarsimha Bharati Swami in Mumbai at her residence Prabhu Kunj in
Mumbai 2018.
 The veteran singer has several awards to her credit in her over 7-decadelong career, including three National Awards.
 Mangeshkar was awarded the Bharat Ratna, the highest civilian award in the country, in 2001 – the second vocalist, after MS Subbulakshmi to receive the honour.
 In 1984, the State Government of Madhya Pradesh instituted the Lata Mangeshkar Award in honour of Lata Mangeshkar.
 The State Government of Maharashtra also instituted a Lata Mangeshkar Award in 1992.
